A pattern is only as flat as the fill under it
Hudson sits at the western edge of Pasco County on the Gulf. In 1950, W.L. Hendry began digging inlets near Hudson Springs and spread the spoil to raise lots. Those became the Port of Hudson neighborhood, and in the 1980s people began building larger homes along the canals. Soil mapping of the CDP shows 14.8 percent of sampled points as filled or disturbed Udalfic Arents-Urban land, with well-drained Jonesville and Paola sands inland. A lot near the water can be made ground. A lot a few streets back can be native sand.
A stamped job cares about that more than a plain slab does. A patterned surface shows a dip, because the stone or brick lines stop meeting across it. Before forms go up we probe the base, pull anything soft, compact in lifts and check grade with a string line. If the lot sits on spoil, tell us what you know about past settling and we'll price a deeper base so the surface stays even.
Stamping gives you one poured slab, with control joints cut along the pattern lines at the end of the job, instead of single units that shift one by one. The stamped concrete vs pavers guide compares what each one does when ground moves.
Zone AE, zone VE and what a stamped patio has to check first
FEMA flood zones at 26 sample points in Hudson came out 57.7 percent AE, 3.8 percent VE, 26.9 percent X minimal hazard and 11.5 percent X shaded for the 0.2 percent annual chance. About 62 percent of sampled points are in a Special Flood Hazard Area. Those are shares of sample points, not acreage, so your lot has its own answer on FEMA's map.
Pasco's exemption sheet (rev. 6/30/2026) lists non-structural flatwork under 500 sq ft per parcel, and the state's under-$7,500 rule for single-family work does not apply to property in a flood hazard area. The county's home page still links an older sheet, rev. 2/18/2026, that excludes flood zones from its entire list. As stamped concrete contractors in Hudson, we don't guess which sheet governs your canal-front patio. We ask Pasco Building Construction Services in writing and put the answer in your estimate. The Permits and Forms page also carries a checklist for V and Coastal AE zone design certificates, so ask early if your lot is on the water side. Our Hudson concrete patios page goes deeper on the sheet conflict for plain patios.
